Methods: Between January 1994 and December 2008, 84 early elderly breast cancer patients aged ≥ 65years were treated with surgery. Forty-four patients underwent modified radical mastectomy and 40 underwent simple mastectomy. Re-sults: Fifty-four ( 64.3% ) patients had comorbidities, including coronary heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, and so on. After a medi-an follow up of 36.5 months ( 11 to 280 months ), the five-year cumulative survival rate in the breast-modified radical mastectomygroup and mastectomy group were 86.0% and 84.7%, respectively ( P = 0.786 ). The five-year recurrence rates were 3.3% and 7.9%, re-spectively ( P = 0.565 ). Conclusion: Simple mastectomy is suitable for the treatment of early elderly breast cancer patients due to itslower complication and recurrence rates. Early elderly women with breast cancer may be safely treated using simple mastectomy. Modi-fied radical mastectomy does not significantly increase the overall survival. Keywords Elderly; Breast cancer; Modified radical mastectomy; Mastectomy
